Solar Powered Bird Feeders – A Feeder and a Garden Light
The idea of a solar powered bird feeder struck me as odd when I first saw it. What could you possibly need to power on a bird feeder. I had seen motorized squirrel proof feeders before as a possible candidate for a powered bird feeder, but what else could need it?
Turns out that a solar bird feeder combines a little of the landscaping features into the bird feeder. The solar panels spend the day charging the batteries, and then at night they power a small landscape light. This works reasonably well, given that the feeder is mounted relatively high so the light can be seen easily, as opposed to walkway lights that are often at ground level. Makes quite an impression in the evening hours.
Since they use rechargeable batteries, it's good to make sure you get one with batteries you can replace. I'm sure it works best when you mount it where the solar panels get a lot of sunshine. And keep the birds off the panels so they don't soil them and decrease their efficiency.
