Wood is a natural for a birdhouse, and mahogany is one
of the most attractive of the woods used for bird houses.
Here are just a few of the commercially available mahogany
bird houses. The styles are of all sorts of creative designs.
This is really one of the all time favorite wood species for
use in birding projects, especially in smaller birdhouses.
This is a dense wood so it withstands weather well. It is one
of the more expensive woods, but it has an unmistakeable
finish and is one of the more beautiful wood species.
Mahogany has a generally straight grain and is usually free
of voids and pockets. It has a reddish-brown color, which
darkens over time, and displays a beautiful reddish sheen
when polished. It has excellent workability, and is very
durable. The size of the trees meant that wide boards were
once available (and still are of the non-endangered
varieties). These properties make it a favourable wood for
crafting furniture, and fine birdhouses as well.
